We will write a custom essay sample on Henry Dvid Thoreau Biography (in First Person) or any similar topic only for you Order Now We lived a very humble life; my father worked in a pencil company while my mother tended to the house and took care of me and my siblings. (Otfinoski pg. 60) My family was really pushing for me to start school at Harvard College but the cost was too expensive for my family. My father owned a small pencil factory and my mother took in boarders to help make ends meet. But, through great sacrifice my family was able to pitch in the money to send me to college, and so I entered the class of 1833 at the age of 16 and graduated in the year 1837. (Otfinoski pg. 60) After graduating Harvard College I went back to Concord to start my own academy with my brother John Jr. and teach the way I felt was right. Together with my brother we taught about 20 students. I believe that the academy would have lasted longer if my brother hadnââ¬â¢t taken ill, the work was just too much for me to manage on my own. Otfinoski pg. 61-62) Shortly after closing the academy my brother died I was devastated. I walked 40 miles to attend one of Ralph Waldo Emersonââ¬â¢s lectures, soon after I was able to meet the great man. Emerson offered me a job; it was as a caretaker and a handyman in his home I would live there and work while he was away doing his lectures. In our free time we would discuss Transcendentalism, a philosophy for which he was well known. I was inspired by his radical view and ideas, and looked up to him as a mentor and hero. (Otfinoski pg. 2) Feeling it was time to see more of the world I left Emersonââ¬â¢s and headed back to Concord. In March 1845 I headed towards Walden Pond where I built a cabin for myself and stood there for two years. My reasons for going there were to experience life and discover the true account of it. During my time at the Walden Pond I worked tirelessly on the manuscripts that will later become my first two books. (Otfinoski pg. 62-64) In May of 1849 a Boston publisher published my first book, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers. Although it sold poorly I never gave up. I later wrote about my experience living at the Walden Pond this book was entitled Walden which also wasnââ¬â¢t as popular as I would have hoped but that still didnââ¬â¢t bring me down. (Otfinoski pg. 64-66) Soon, nature being the very thing that I loved became my enemy as I contracted tuberculosis from living in the outdoors with the bad weather and the constant exposure to the graphite dust working in the pencil factory all caught up to me and on May 6, 1862 I died at the age of 45 years old. Multiple Sclerosis Essays (1698 words) - Cytokines,
Multiple Sclerosis The Inside Disease Multiple Sclerosis affects 350,000 people around the United States. Judy Rhamini, a forty- six-year-old mother of two, was diagnosed with the crippling disease in 1988. In late 1997, her attacks had become so devastating that one of them left her arms and legs temporarily paralyzed. To combat the attacks, Mrs. Rhamini began a four- hour daily regimen of intravenous steroids. Within weeks, her pain was gone. Judy Rhamini now takes Avonex, which is a beta- interferon, and since beginning this treatment, she has only had two mild attacks. With advances in the medical field, there is now hope that a cure for multiple sclerosis will be found in the near future. Many new drugs are being developed to stunt the progression of multiple sclerosis. Some of these new drugs are being used today, and they are helping patients cope with the hardships of multiple sclerosis. Judy Rhamini tells how Avonex has helped her; My MS has definitely slowed down. I am so grateful. However, to find a cure, scientists still have to come to a distinct conclusion to what causes this disease. The only way to rid a patient of this horrible disease is to attack the main culprit responsible for bringing the disease upon a person. Although scientists are not totally sure, there are many possibilities as to what causes multiple sclerosis. Scientists feel that there are two main possible causes for multiple sclerosis: the environment in which a person lives, and Herpes Virus 6. Experts are not totally sure, but they are working out the problems, and are confident they will find the answer soon. Some viruses have been thought to be a cause, but it usually comes down to the environment in which a person lives. Speculations have been made that the environment in which a person lives, may be a cause for multiple sclerosis. There are approximately 350,000 Americans with MS, and estimates suggest that there are two hundred new cases diagnosed each week. With this in mind, it would make a person think that America is the environment to blame, and this just might be the case. Researchers have found that the further one lives from the equator, the more likely one is to develop multiple sclerosis. Obviously, there has to be more causes for multiple sclerosis. There is no way one can develop a disease solely by living in a certain area. In addition to the environment, viruses common in the area may also bring on this disease. In the past, many viruses have been linked to multiple sclerosis. The latest and strongest case has been Herpes Virus 6 (HHV-6). In a recent study, more than 70 percent of the patients tested showed signs of active infections of HHV-6. This made scientists and doctors feel as if they had found the cause, but they still did not have the 100 percent sure results they needed. The cause is still unknown, because HHV-6 may only be a symptom of multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis has many symptoms, and scientists fear that their latest discovery may just be that, an unfortunate symptom that patients will have to suffer with. Multiple sclerosis is not an easy disease to put a finger on. Patients are often misdiagnosed, and are forced to cope with their symptoms until they are finally diagnosed correctly. Multiple sclerosis has many symptoms, some physical and some mental. The physical symptoms may be more difficult of the two to deal with. Multiple sclerosis can be diagnosed with the occurrence of many physical symptoms. Some debilitating physical symptoms of multiple sclerosis can be change in vision, abnormal sensations throughout the body, and muscle weakness. Symptoms appear to patients in attacks and / or phases. Symptoms can appear and disappear in a matter of days or weeks. Many of the main physical symptoms go into remission for some time, but many may be permanent. Remember, most patients become paralyzed as the disease progresses. Along with physical symptoms, multiple sclerosis can bring on many mental changes to a person. Multiple sclerosis brings on many problems to the mental capabilities of a patient. Multiple sclerosis can force a person to go through psychological changes that can be devastating to a persons life. These changes

A Close Reading of Nicholas Carr Essays
A Close Reading of Nicholas Carr Essays A Close Reading of Nicholas Carr Paper A Close Reading of Nicholas Carr Paper The essay, although Informed Is an opinion piece. It has been written expressly for the reason to take the knowledge available and apply it to Cares ideas, to reinforce his points as he tries to persuade the reader to re-think their understanding of the internet and its uses. There are many sources available to use for this topic and Carr takes advantage of this, however there is not much in the way of hard evidence, most of the evidence he uses Is anecdotal that he can align with his own. Ear actually uses predominantly online resources; he often quotes online floggers and friends hat he describes as literary types. He uses this form of evidence to prove points on how the way peoples attitudes are changing, such as this quote by Scott Kara, a flogger, l was a lit major In college, and used to be a voracious book reader after Kara confessed to have stopped reading books, Carr has tactfully used this quote to justify the point and can follow it up and build on it. It Is remarkable that Cars key study he uses Is also an online source, continuing his reliance on the Internet even as he scrutinizes it. After conceding that anecdotes are to a sufficient form of evidence, in a seeming effort to legitimate his essay he refers to an online study conducted by the university College London. The conclusion of the study that had confirmed that research habits were changing fits well with Cars overall point. However you must make note of Cares choice to omit of any other form of study, he only references the one online, which leads to the conclusion that this exclusion is actually a comment on how everyone has become overly reliant on the Internet that It has even led to the desertion of printed studies, this subtle point actually ties in well with the previous quote of Scott Kara successfully tying together various parts of his text. The first reading of the piece gave a sense of ease as Cars style, flow and finesse gently prod the reader to at least consider the argument he Is making objectively. Carr wants to make the essay as palatable as possible, by publishing it on the Internet as an article in an online magazine he is actively obeying the ideas that peoples reading and thinking Is changing, so he writes for the audience, however this Is also providing his own evidence to his point. SE of Internet Jargon, the term flogger for example will make the reader feel relaxed as this type of language will be recognized by any internet user and they wont feel overwhelmed. By using familiar words Carr Is assuming Tanat people will De addle to comprehend Ana retain Nils message and that is one of his big concerns. Carr sites the study by the University college London that people have become power browsers who look for quick wins, so by using language and that amplifies retention he tries to discourage that style of reading, this is another subtle layer to his argument which he is repeatedly making while taking full advantage of multiple assets that this style of writing offers. Page 2 Understanding that critics of the reading would be quick to dismiss it as techno phobic, Carr identifies the possibility that he could in fact Just be over thinking the issue. He looks back in history and discusses historical figures that also had a disapproval of change. Socrates disapproved of writing development because it could cause people to become complacent with knowledge and Sacrificing worried about the easy availability of books, as he thought it would lead to laziness. Carr points out that often these fears came true however that the worried parties frequently did not foresee that the benefits would out way the issues. This is an unusual point for Carr to make, but very interesting because it invites us, as he puts it to be skeptical of his Skepticism. He is inviting the readers to look closer at what he is saying, he is trying to motivate them to take note of the writing and think about it, he is cleverly prompting independent thought as well as trying to dodge being called a Ululated as he predicts. The crux of Cars argument is not about how the Internet is changing Just the technological and practical side of reading, but how these fundament al changes have a radiating effect through the mind and emotions of people. This is brought out in essence with the shift in tone and content towards the last section of the essay, now his writing is directed with a more rhetorical intention as he discusses the mind, he draws a clear contrast between reading a book, as a collection of printed pages to inspire analysis, to that of an internet article, an abstract bundle of knowledge we arrives less response out of on a deep intellectual or emotional level. Nicholas Cars essay, touches on many points within a broad field, he takes his ideas and coordinates them, paying close attention to peers and the past. His writing style is effectively used to add additional layers of meaning to the skin-deep layer that anybody can read, and he is fully aware of his works context and predicts reactions to assert himself though his writing. If Google is making us dumber it will not be for writers like Nicholas Carr not trying to prevent it.

Key Quotes from A Wrinkle in Time
Key Quotes from 'A Wrinkle in Time' A Wrinkle in Time is a favorite fantasy classic, by Madeleine LEngle. The novel was first published in 1962 after LEngles manuscript was rejected by more than two dozen publishers. She theorized that the book was too different for publishers to grasp, especially since it was a science fiction story with a female protagonist, almost unheard of at the time. It also includes a good deal of quantum physics, and it wasnt entirely clear at the time whether the book was written for children or adults. The story focuses on Meg Murry and her brother Charles Wallace, their friend Calvin, and the whereabouts of the Murrys father, a brilliant scientist. The three are transported through space by three supernatural creatures, Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Which, via a tesseract, explained to Meg as a wrinkle in time. Theyre drawn into a battle against the evil creatures IT and the Black Thing. The book is the first in a series about the Murry and OKeefe families. Other books in the series include A Wind in the Door, Many Waters, and A Swiftly Tilting Planet. Here are some key quotes from A Wrinkle in Time, with some context included. Quotes But you see, Meg, just because we dont understand doesnt mean that the explanation doesnt exist. Megs mother responding mysteriously to Megs question about whether there is an explanation for everything. A straight line is not the shortest distance between two points... Mrs. Whatsit explaining the basic concept of the tesseract. This resonates for Meg, who is brilliant at solving math problems, but clashes with teachers when she doesnt arrive at the answers in the way they want her to. She believes early in the novel that finding a result is the important thing, not how you get there. Suddenly there was a great burst of light through the Darkness. The light spread out and where it touched the Darkness the Darkness disappeared. The light spread until the patch of Dark Thing had vanished, and there was only a gentle shining, and through the shining came the stars, clear and pure. This describes the battle between goodness/light and darkness/evil, in an instance where light triumphs. As the skipping rope hit the pavement, so did the ball. As the rope curved over the head of the jumping child, the child with the ball caught the ball. Down came the ropes. Down came the balls. Over and over again. Up. Down. All in rhythm. All identical. Like the houses. Like the paths. Like the flowers. This is a description of the evil planet of Camazotz, and how all of its citizens are controlled by the Black Thing to think and behave the same way. Its a glimpse of what life on Earth may come to be unless the Black Thing can be defeated. Youre given the form, but you have to write the sonnet yourself. What you say is completely up to you. Mrs. Whatsit tries to explain the concept of free will to Meg, by comparing human life to a sonnet: The form is pre-determined, but your life is what you make of it. Love. That was what she had that IT did not have. This is Megs realization that she has the power to save Charles Wallace from IT and the Black Thing, because of her love for her brother.
